A Study on Population, Family Planning and Reproductive Physiology Content of Middle and High School Curriculum

Abstract
1) General problems concerning population and their corrective measures were mentioned in most of the social science textbooks of middle schools, and a great proportion of geography textbooks and physical culture textbooks of high school in Korea.
Problems concerning population were mentioned in relation to economic development in many of the political and social science textbooks and general social science textbooks and general social science textbooks of high schools. The outline of reproductive physiology was mentioned in relation to family planning in home economics textbooks of both high and middle schools.
2) Problems concerning population, family planning, and gynophysiology constituted an average of 3.8 per cent or the greatest proportion of topics mentioned in geography textbooks of high schools, an average of 3.8 per cent or the second largest proportion in home economics textbooks of middle schools, and 3.3 per cent in home economics textbooks of high schools.
A certain group of authors extensively handled these problems in social science textbooks of middle schools. They constituted 13.5 per cent or the greatest proportion of all the topics mentioned in these textbooks.
3) A total of 32 groups of authors mentioned the population increase rate of Korea. Three of the groups mentioned it by way of the annual increase rate per 1,000 persons. Seven mentioned it in percentage. Seven indicated the annual increase of population in terms of the number of persons. Four presented both percentage and the number of persons. One group rated Korea¢¥s population increase in comparison with those of other nations in the world. Only one group of authors specified the effective year of the population increase rate it mentioned. The annual population increase rate they presented varied from 2.5 to 3.0 per cent. Out of a total of 10 groups of authors of middle school social science textbooks, eight mentioned population increase rate, thereby showing the greatest ratio.
4) The density of population was mentioned by 24 groups of authors. However, only three groups gave the effective year of the density of population they mentioned. The density of population they presented varied from 200 to 297 persons per square kilometer. One group said that Korea¢¥s density of population was the world¢¥s fourth thickest population. Most of the authors gave figures close to the actual density of population in 1960. The physical culture textbooks of high schools gave the nation¢¥s population, but none of them specified her density of population. The greatest proportion or three groups of authors presented figures close to the population of 1966. One group presented a figure close to the population of 1960.
5) A total of 41 groups of authors mentioned measures for controlling population in their middle and high school textbooks. Twenty eight or 68.3 per cent of them termed family planning as the best measures while the 13 others defined it as the second to fifth best measures.
As far as this matter was concerned physical culture textbooks of high schools were 100 per cent correct. Only 20 per cent of social science textbooks of middle schools were right, thereby showing the lowest rate of correctiveness.
6) Figures concerning menstruation were mentioned in home economics textbooks of middle schools as follows;
The first menstruation comes at the age of 10 to 16.
Menstruation cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days.
Each menstruation lasts one day to eight days.
Bleeding ranges from 100 to 150 grams in terms of weight.
The age of last menstruation is 48 to 50.
7) All groups of authors mentioned problems concerning conception, delivery, and family planning in their home economics textbooks of high schools. Half of them explained family planning fairly in detail.
